Classic Sourdough Bread

You will need:

  • sourdough starter1 cup active sourdough starter
  • bread flour3 cups bread flour
  • water1.5 cups water
  • salt1.5 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. First, take a large bowl and mix together your active sourdough starter, bread flour, and water. Make sure all the ingredients are well combined
  2. Once you've mixed your dough, cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rest. This rest period, known as autolyse, allows the flour to fully hydrate and begins the fermentation process
  3. After the rest period, add your salt to the dough. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic, this should take about 10 minutes
  4. Now, let your dough rise. This could take anywhere from 3 to 12 hours depending on the temperature of your kitchen. You'll know it's ready when it has doubled in size
  5. Next, shape your dough into a loaf. If you have a proofing basket, place your loaf in there to help it hold its shape
  6. While your bread is proofing, preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. This high temperature will give your bread a nice crust
  7. Finally, it's time to bake your loaf. Place it in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. You'll know it's done when it's golden brown and sounds hollow when you tap it
